Ruben Amorim could be set for a major hike in his pay packet if he agrees to become the next Manchester United manager, according to a report.

The Red Devils are in talks with the Sporting CP manager to replace Erik ten Hag, who was relieved of his duties on Monday morning following a dismal start to the campaign.

Mail Sport revealed last week that Amorim was one of four targets if Ten Hag was axed. His assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy has been put in temporary charge, but United swiftly opened talks with Amorim and Sporting over triggering the £8.5millon release clause in his contract in Portugal.

According to talkSPORT, the 39-year-old could more than treble his current salary by completing a move to Old Trafford.

Amorim earns around £2.1m-a-year as Sporting boss, while his reported demands of a contract worth £7m-a-year when negotiating with West Ham last summer indicate he will command far greater in Manchester.

Amorim was interviewed over the managerial vacancies at Liverpool and West Ham earlier this year, is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.

It’s understood that Amorim was planning to leave Sporting at the end of the season, but was made aware of United’s interest earlier this month and has had two rounds of talks.

Asked about the links to United in the wake of Ten Hag’s sacking, he said on Monday: ‘I was already expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment. I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all.’

Amorim has led Sporting to two Portuguese league titles in his four years with the club.

As for the outgoing Ten Hag, Mail Sport revealed that sacking the Dutchman is costing United around £15million. They triggered a one-year contract extension in the summer after deciding not to recruit a replacement.

Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup earlier this year, two trophies he was insistent on reminding people of when he faced criticism.

In his first season he led United to third in the Premier League, a marked improvement on the disastrous campaign before which saw them stumble to sixth under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

However, they were unable to build on that success. United finished bottom of their Champions League group before recording their worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth.
