Brit woman, 14, tragically dies on household vacation in Rome after consuming pizza exterior B&B
A British teenager heartbreakingly has died on a family holiday after suffering a fatal allergic reaction. The girl who hasn’t been publicly named had been indulging in pizza and dessert on the first day of the family trip to Rome.
The 14-year-old, identified only as Skyler by Italian press, had arrived in Italy’s capital for a week of culture, soaking up the sights of museums and ancient ruins, with her family who were staying in Gianicolense district.
Tragedy hit on Thursday evening when Skyler and her family tucked into their first meal in Rome at the “I love pizza kebab” joint, just a stone’s throw from their B&B. Mere minutes after polishing off dinner, the teen started feeling rough.
Skyler’s symptoms escalated quickly, with her throat clamping shut, breaths coming hard, heart racing, and her body shaking with chills and tremors. In a panic, her parents sought help from their B&B staff, who dialled emergency services.
Despite paramedics dashing to the scene and finding Skyler out cold, efforts to revive her failed, reports the Mirror.
The young girl was whisked towards San Camillo hospital in an ambulance, but tragically, she succumbed to anaphylactic shock before they could get there, as reported by Corriere della Sera. The British clan had plans to visit the Vatican Museums next, followed by the Colosseum and the Imperial Fora.
The Monteverde police station’s investigators have initiated an investigation after speaking with the girl’s parents, who revealed her peanut allergy. Skyler’s family also mentioned that she had previously suffered severe allergic reactions and would therefore avoid anything potentially containing peanuts, meticulously checking food labels.
The family also stated they would always ask about allergens when dining out. However, it remains uncertain whether the restaurant was informed of the teenager’s allergies prior to the tragic incident.
As reported by Corriere della Sera, investigators have conversed with the owners of the restaurant. ASL Roma 3, responsible for health services in that area of the city, has commenced hygiene and health inspections, including verifying the availability of allergen lists at the pizza establishment.
Investigators are probing whether the allergen was present in the pre-packaged dessert consumed by Skyler. The family has reportedly returned to England, and Skyler’s body will be repatriated following the completion of medical-legal investigations ordered by the Prosecutor’s Office.
Anaphylaxis is a rapidly occurring, life-threatening allergic reaction, as explained by the NHS. It can be triggered by food, medication or insect stings.
