‘Ruben Amorim did his teaching badges with me – Man Utd are getting the correct man’
Ruben Amorim has been tipped as the correct managerial appointment at Manchester United.
It was the end of the road for Erik ten Hag on Monday, who was shown the door after scraping together only four wins in all competitions this term. The dreadful run of form left United slumped an embarrassing 14th in the Premier League table.
United are now finalising the details to hire Amorim as the main man, with Ruud van Nistelrooy as their interim boss until the international break. Sporting Lisbon’s gaffer has been turning heads in Portugal, snatching two Primeira Liga crowns during his reign.
Gabby Agbonlahor, who picked up coaching tips alongside Amorim, reckons he’s the real deal for United. Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said: “I did do my coaching badges with him.
“You do your own sessions because you have to pass the badges. But he was one of the ones who was there and you could tell was so into it in a way that he had to get his badges to go and start managing.
“It’s not as easy as people think. You put on different sessions. The first one I put on was a crossing and finishing session, keep ball session then a shooting session. He was very focused.
“Since the start of last season, Sporting Lisbon have scored the most goals in the top six leagues. They were waiting 19 years to win a title, he goes there and they’ve won two in the last five seasons,” reports the Mirror.
“I just think when you look at what he’s done since leaving Braga to Sporting Lisbon, winning their first title in 19 years, Manchester United have got the right man.”
United have been locked in negotiations with Sporting all week, having already agreed to pay his £8.3m release clause.
But Amorim believes those negotiations, which are currently centred on the release of his coaching staff, will come to a successful end soon. “It’s a negotiation between two clubs, which isn’t easy.
“After the game on Friday, we will have all these clarifications. Then the decision will be known. Soon the soap opera will end.
“I think that in everyone’s life there are times when we’re doing really well, but then we want something more, maybe to prove something more. I think all coaches need a good backroom staff.
“I don’t want to go into too much detail. That was one of the reasons I always wanted to stay here, it was the people I work with.”
