BREAKING Man Utd unveil Ruben Amorim as new supervisor with arrival and first recreation confirmed
Ruben Amorim has been named as Manchester United’s new manager.
Amorim, 39, has left Sporting CP – who are currently undefeated at the summit of the Portuguese top tier – to fill the boots of Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman’s reign came to end after the Red Devils sunk to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham.
The Portuguese boss was almost immediately named as the frontrunner for the job – with United triggering his release clause.
And United have now confirmed his appointment in a statement: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.
“He has signed a contract until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting CP.
“Rúben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Rúben joins.”
The Red Devils has sent a delegation to Lisbon on Monday to negotiate with Sporting, aware of the notice period Amorim would have to serve. He will now join up with the Red Devils on November 11 – with Van Nistelrooy remaining in charge until that date.
Amorim’s first game will be against Ipswich on November 24 – after the November international break. United will announce what coaches that Amorim will bring with him in the coming weeks.
Amorim spent almost all of his playing career in Portugal, save for one season on loan at Al-Wakrah in Qatar. He would start his managerial career in 2018 with Casa Pia before moving to Braga’s B team.
He would then be promoted to Braga’s senior team where he would win the Taca da Liga (Portugal’s cup). And his performances at Braga would be enough to impress Sporting CP’s management, who hired him as their boss in 2020.
At Sporting he has established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after young coaches, twice guiding the club to the league title and winning the Taca da Liga two more times.
