Man Utd goal Viktor Gyokeres nets 4 in Ruben Amorim’s farewell Sporting tour
Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP farewell tour started in electric fashion on Friday evening.
Amorim, 39, watched his side put in a five star performance against Estrela Amadora at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. And it was Viktor Gyokeres that was the man on the moment – scoring four of Sporting’s five goals on the evening.
Gyokeres has emerged as Sporting’s star, with the big Swede rivalling Erling Haaland for goals this calendar year. Gyokeres, who once turned out for Coventry, netted a hat-trick in the first 42 minutes before grabbing the fourth in the second half.
“Viktor Gyokeres – Just seems like he don’t give a f*** and Manchester United need him under Ruben Amorim,” one fan declared. While a second replied: “United are going to sign Gyokeres for £80m in the summer because of the Amorim/Sporting link, aren’t they…”
“This account is officially campaigning for Manchester United to sign Viktor Gyokeres this January,” a third declared. And another added: “It’s taken Amorim to be the United manager for everyone to realise that Gyokeres is a Gunman, happy everyone has finally caught on!”
Speaking after the game, Gyokeres said: “[It’s] sad that Amorim is leaving, he’s done amazing here, we will do the same job and keep the same faith in the team. We all wish him the best.”
While Amorim added: “I can’t say much. It’s a phase where people feel what they have to feel. I wanted to explain the situation.
“At the beginning of the season, and the chairman was there to confirm it, I had a conversation with him and [director of football Hugo] Viana, and I said that, whatever happened, it was my last season at Sporting.
“The season started and we started to have a very good season. United came along, paid the clause, above the clause, and the chairman defended his interests. I never discussed anything with the chairman.
“The only request I made was that it would be at the end of the season and they told me that wasn’t possible, that it was now or never.”
