Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd audition will get off to worst potential begin because of Phil Foden
It took just four minutes for Phil Foden to ruin Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United audition.
Amorim, 39, is set to takeover at Old Trafford on November 11, before his first United clash on November 24 against Ipswich Town. However, he still had his final home game as Sporting boss – against United’s bitter rivals Manchester City.
And four minutes into the clash, Franco Israel was already picking the ball out from the back of his net after Foden lashed the ball home. Erling Haaland, too, was active doors – as the big Norwegian twice came close to doubling City’s lead.
“Foden telling Rúben Amorim ‘Welcome to Manchester’,” one fan joked. While a second shared: “Amorim in the mud already. Phil Foden is cooking big for Man City!”
“Tuned in to watch Amorim ball and Foden’s already scored,” a third fumed. And another added: “Amorim playing hoof and chase football… we’re actually cooked…”
Amorim will pitch up in Manchester after he has one final dance with Sporting when they travel to Braga over the weekend – and his first game in charge will be against Ipswich on November 24.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s clash, Amorim said: “My focus is on winning the match for Sporting. The conclusions are not important for me because they could be erroneous: if we win tomorrow they will think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived.
“That will be very difficult. It could increase expectations, I don’t know what is better when I start my new adventure.”
He added: “Tomorrow I will learn a lot during the matches, one thing to watch on TV another is to see it live. When I go to Man Utd I will have a different idea, but I don’t know what I will find.”
