Foreign secretary pressured into climbdown after calling Trump ‘neo-Nazi sociopath’
Foreign Secretary David Lammy could find things tricky when he meets Donald Trump.
The minister wrote on social media in 2018: “Trump is not only a woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath.
“He is also a profound threat to the international order that has been the foundation of western progress for so long.”
It was announced on Wednesday morning that Trump, 78, had won the 2024 presidential election in the US. The politician was the Republican Party’s nominee and comfortably beat Democrati Kamala Harris in what many thought was a shock result.
No more than for hapless Lammy.
Lammy is thought to since have met with Trump alongside Keir Starmer earlier this year.
Following the news of Trump’s win this week, Lammy tweeted: “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on your victory. The UK has no greater friend than the US, with the special relationship being cherished on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 80 years. We look forward to working with you and @JDVance in the years ahead.”
Media personality Thomas Skinner, 33 – who appeared on BBC’s the Apprentice in 2019 – criticised Lammy in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday afternoon.
It included a photo that showed a glass of Fanta on a table beside a pool.
He wrote: “David Lammy has made a proper t*t of himself hasn’t he. This is the Geeza we have representing the UK. Why don’t we have real people in politics, business owners and real people who actually know how to become successful and stand up for what is right. People that have been in real life situations and had to adapt. Not be a weathercock.”
Skinner added: “Anyway I love Trump I think he is brilliant, that’s my opinion. I think it’s good he is back in charge, it will be good for the UK economy. UK always piggy backs off the USA. We all have opinions that is mine. Happy Wednesday I’m gonna drink another lemon Fanta and eat some paella.”
Daily Star says
In the end, it wasn’t even close. Donald Trump pulled off a stunning victory as he swept to power.
His triumph now presents a serious headache for our own Government. Labour ministers have made ever-so-slightly unfavourable remarks about the Republican candidate in the past.
And that’s putting it charitably.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy in particular has his work cut out to convince the incoming US administration that he deserves to be taken seriously.
When you’re in opposition, you have to be diplomatic if you’re sincere about getting into power. After all, it’s not a students’ union.
You can’t just strut around trying to impress your pals with your salty language and then expect to be treated like a proper politician.
For too long we have had unserious leaders, from all parties, in charge. But this is a dangerous time. It’s time they all start acting like adults.
