Man who had world’s first face transplant shares engagement pics after horror blaze
Joe DiMeo, who underwent the world’s first successful face and double hand transplant, recently shared his engagement photos online.
In 2018, DiMeo fell asleep at the wheel after a night shift, leading to a crash where his car hit a curb and burst into flames. Two passers-by heroically pulled him from the burning vehicle, saving his life, however, 80% of his body sustained third-degree burns. He was placed in a medically-induced coma for two months and underwent more than 20 reconstructive surgeries while doctors searched for a suitable transplant match.
In August 2020, DiMeo underwent a 23-hour transplant surgery with only a 6% chance of success. The operation was a milestone for both his family and the medical field as he became the first person to receive a new face and both hands from the same donor, an unidentified man from Delaware.
Previously, similar attempts had failed. An attempt in Paris in 2009 saw the patient die a month later, and another in Boston in 2011 saw the hands removed after the body rejected them, reports Mail.
Jessica Koby, 33, read about DiMeo’s story and was moved by his resilience. She reached out to him on Instagram and the pair quickly connected. They began exchanging messages daily, bonding over their shared love of Boston Terrier dogs. Their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship, with Jessica eventually relocating from Southern California to be closer to him. She said: “He is quiet at first but very knowledgeable and engaging. I love how gentle, kind, and courageous he is.”
Jessica announced their engagement on Instagram, sharing photos where she wore a black dress and heels showcasing her huge diamond ring, while DiMeo chose a yellow top and black pants. The caption read: “Always my love,” and fans flooded the comments with messages of support and congratulations. One person noted: “Beautiful couple, outfits, and ring. Love you guys,” while others added comments like “Congrats!” and “So freaking precious”.
DiMeo has made remarkable progress since his surgery thanks to extensive therapy. He has regained a level of independence and can drive again. He did however acknowledge the harsh reality of learning who his true friends were following his life-altering accident.
