Jake Paul breaks silence on Netflix stream ‘crash’ after beating Mike Tyson

Jake Paul has given a big thumbs up to Netflix after his triumph over Mike Tyson – despite the streaming giant facing backlash from viewers.

The social media star turned boxer took down 58 year old Tyson with relative ease on Friday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. ‘Iron Mike’ struggled to keep pace with the younger fighter, and the bout went the full distance, sparking outrage among fans over the controversial match-up.

Netflix’s debut into live sports broadcasting was marked by this event, which will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. The significant age difference of 31 years between the combatants was a point of contention before the fight even began.

Moreover, Netflix experienced several technical hitches throughout the evening. Streaming issues led disgruntled fans to vent on social media about persistent buffering, especially during Katie Taylor’s light-welterweight title defence against Amanda Serrano in the co-main event, reports the Mirror US.

However, post-fight, Paul, who is pocketing a minimum of $40 million from the bout, lauded Netflix for their role in the event while acknowledging the streaming difficulties that plagued viewers. “Everyone’s ecstatic. Shout out to Netflix. Amazing partners, amazing people,” he commented on his win.

“I think it’s six times what I thought, but the numbers are still coming in. Netflix crashed, yeah. But shoutout to the Netflix engineers, we love them, they fixed it straight away. Shoutout to them.”

Fans expressed their frustration with the streaming platform on social media, including world title challenger Anthony Yarde, who posted on X: “I did not stay up this late for Netflix to crash like this.”

When the stream was working, cameras gave fans a glimpse of Tyson’s bare backside in the lead-up to the main event, as the feed cut to Tyson’s locker room between rounds of the Taylor vs Serrano fight. Netflix is also set to broadcast two live NFL games on Christmas.

Paul secured a comfortable points decision victory, taking his record to 11-1. However, after the fight, attention turned to the boos the fighters received for the lack of action, with Paul blaming Tyson’s tactics for making it difficult to put on a show.

‘The Problem Child’ also claimed that he adjusted his approach to the fight in order to prolong the bout.

“Thank you for everyone tuning in and coming. I tried to give the fight the best fight I possibly could, but when someone’s just surviving in the ring, basically, it’s hard to make it exciting,” Paul said. “I could really get him to engage me or slip shots or do something super cool or whatever. But I don’t care what people have to say. It is what it is.”

Paul added that he “wanted to knock him out” after he slapped him at their final face-off, but conceded: “That kind of went away as the rounds went on. I just have so much respect for him,” he declared.
