Heavy snow is causing chaos across the country today with trains cancelled, schools shut and drivers urged to avoid roads with cars getting stuck in blizzard-type conditions.
The UK has woken up to its first major taste of winter this year after an arctic blast saw temperatures plunge to -11.2C amid snow and ice warnings covering the Midlands, northern England, parts of Northern Ireland, north east Wales and sections of Northern Ireland.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the first amber cold weather health alert of the season this week and, along with charity Age UK, warned that the conditions could be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly.
