Met Office provides UK 17-hour ice warning – see full checklist of areas that could possibly be affected

The Met Office has slapped a 17-hour ice alert on the UK. A fresh Yellow Warning is in place as a great swathe of Britain woke up to a blanket of snow. Icy patches are expected to form on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, heightening the risk of slips, falls, and travel disruption, the Met Office warned.

As rain and sleet clear overnight, freezing temperatures will take hold. Light snowfall may dust some regions, particularly higher ground like the North Downs, reports the Express. Brits are being urged to tread carefully, allow extra time for travel, and stick to main roads when walking or driving, as these are more likely to have been gritted.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued advice to people, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, to keep their homes warm to stave off health risks such as chest infections or strokes.

Snow on roofs in Britain
Icy conditions could heighten the risk of slips, falls, and travel disruption (stock)

This fresh yellow warning comes as snowy weather caused power outages and travel mayhem as ‘unpassable’ roads emerged following an Arctic onslaught that blanketed parts of the UK overnight.

The nation was on alert for “disruptive snow”, ice, and a chill in the air yesterday after the Met Office rolled out a series of yellow weather warnings across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England.

Forecasts predicted up to 20 centimetres of snow piling up in the hardest-hit regions, giving Brits their “first taste of winter”, the weather experts claimed.

Some of these yellow alerts were set to expire at 10am today, but some have been stretched until 10am tomorrow. The warnings highlight potential power cuts, travel disruption on roads and public transport, and even the possibility of communities becoming isolated, according to the weather boffins.
