Man wants assist convincing spouse they ‘aren’t destitute’ regardless of incomes £128k
A bloke has asked the good people of Reddit for advice on how to help his wife to chill when it comes to spending money.
He triggered a big response when he uploaded a post entitled: “How to convince my wife that we aren’t desitute,” in which he admitted they earn $163k (£128k) combined.
The post said: “Wife(37) and I (36), are always at odds about money.
“Let me preface, we are extremely lucky with our chosen careers. Combine our base salaries is 163k. With bonus potential for me.
“Our only debt is a mortgage with a sub 3% rate, her vehicle with 10k less than. And two credit cards that are paid off every month.
“We have about a 200k in retirement and other investment accounts.

“I bought a bike for $200 and other tech toys for another $200. She blew up on me for wasting money. We follow a strict budget and this was all within my discretionary spending bucket.
“How do I convince her that its OK to spend a little money here and there on fun stuff?
“Edit** We also have a 6 month emergency fund.”
The post attracted over 250 comments.
One user said: “Take her to the casino for some exposure therapy.”
Another wrote: “My wife and I have kept separate bank accounts for the last decade+ of marriage. We used to use a shared credit card for splitting finances. But now I just pay for pretty much all shared expenses.
“When she wants to buy some silly expensive purse, or I want a new bike, nobody cares. Gifts are also more meaningful because we spend our own money on them.”
While one added: “Tell her, life is short, so let’s enjoy it while we can. Today might be the last day, and we never know if we will still be alive tomorrow.”
But one said: “I’m not saying live like paupers, but 200k is pretty low for two people pushing 40. Maybe that’s what she’s concerned about. I think the good thing to do would be to sit down and discuss where you are, where you are going, where you planning to be a year from now, how to get there.”
