Tesco shopper wins ‘dumbest buyer award’ for making easy mistake at self-checkout

A Tesco shopper has been branded the “dumbest customer” after making a huge mistake at a self-checkout till. Taking to Reddit to tell of the mad story, someone claiming to be a member of staff in a Tesco store told how a woman tried to take a parcel to a till . . . which led to chaos ensuing.

Labelling the threat the “dumbest customer award,” the staffer claimed that something happened “on the tills” that they “cannot stop thinking about”.

Without mentioning the specifics of which store it happened in, they detailed: “Our store does Evri drop-offs. in order to send a parcel, you need to print a label to stick onto the parcel using a QR code on your phone.

“The in store Evri printers look like blue boxes – a customer went over to one of the self checkouts and got extremely frustrated as she attempted to scan her heavy parcel box. I asked if there was anything I could do to help as I was extremely confused and she said ‘your machines are absolute rubbish, it won’t print my Evri parcel code’.

“I was trying so hard not to laugh as I explained politely that the self checkouts are only used to scan items in the store – it’s not a printer.”

They added: “I have no idea how she dodged all the obvious clues that she was on a checkout but I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

The Reddit thread was then filled with other contenders for for the “dumbest customer” award, as one detailed how someone tried paying for their shopping with cash by “pressing it into the screen on the self serve” because “that’s how they’ve always done it”.

And another recalled: “We found something like seven debit/credit cards under the scale/scanners between the four tills, and could only assume customers put them there when told ‘please insert your card’ and then got too embarrassed to ask a member of staff to retrieve.”
