David Beckham shares devastation in emotional submit as ‘Man Utd won’t ever be the identical’

David Beckham has shared a touching tribute to former Manchester United receptionist Kath Phipps following her death at the age of 85, joining a host of stars in paying respects to the club icon.

Manchester United broke the news to supporters with a heartfelt announcement on Thursday. Kath became part of the United family in September 1968 as a switchboard operator and dedicated over 55 years to the club in various capacities.

She was a cherished figure among players and staff, especially known for her warm greetings as the training ground receptionist. In 2022, her commitment was honoured with a Service to Football award from the League Managers’ Association, reports the Mirror.

Beckham, who met Phipps daily during his time at the club, expressed a poignant farewell. “Forever in our hearts… The first and last face I would always see was Kath sat at reception at Old Trafford waiting to give me my tickets for the game, she was the heartbeat of Manchester United,” he posted on Facebook.

“Everyone knew who Kath was and everyone adored her. I moved up to Manchester at 15 and Kath made a promise to my mum and dad ‘I’ll look after your boy for you don’t you worry’. And from that first day till the last day I spent with her that’s exactly what she did. Old Trafford will never be the same without your smile as we walk through those doors… We love you.”

“If Kath ever had a bad day, she never brought it to work; her positive attitude helped set the mood for everyone entering the training ground, always ready to lend an ear and offer words of encouragement to anyone who needed them. Kath was a one-woman institution, whose memory will be cherished by everyone at the club who had the privilege of knowing her. We can’t imagine the place without her. Rest in peace, Kath.”

United legend Wayne Rooney echoed Beckham’s sentiments, stating: “The heart and soul of Manchester United. Everything what the club is about. A legend who will be greatly missed. Thanks for the memories Kathy. Thoughts with family and friends.”
