World’s largest ‘rest room seat’ to be inbuilt London as individuals mock new tallest constructing
London will soon be home to a new joint-tallest tower, 1 Undershaft, which, at 309 metres tall, will be identical to the Shard, however there is something other than the height that people have noticed
If you find yourself in the city of London needing to use the loo, don’t panic, in just five years time the square mile will be home to the world’s largest ‘toilet seat’.
…and the new joint-tallest building in Western Europe.
1 Undershaft, London’s new supertall skyscraper has received planning permission and work will soon commence on the enormous tower. It will rise 309 metres into the sky and have 74 floors. It will be exactly the same height as the Shard.
Architect Eric Parry said of the plans: “1 Undershaft is a uniquely welcoming tall building in the City of London that provides free public access on multiple levels throughout the building. These include the London Museum’s education space and free viewing gallery on the uppermost floors and what will become an extraordinary new elevated public sky garden on the 11th floor.
“We’ve listened to the feedback offered by stakeholders and neighbours and submitted a new design proposal for the lower part of the building that improves upon our earlier plans, with more space available in St Helen’s Square, a more strongly expressed public entrance to the building, a new public screen and temporary stage providing cultural experiences, and intensified planting to the landscaped spaces around the base. Crucially, the benefits of the earlier proposal are retained.’

The plans have been amended several times, but the final version includes a new 20-metre public screen displaying public information and showcasing events such as sports games, a museum, offices, food and drink spots and a viewing platform.
It is the viewing platform which is attracting unwanted attention online, due to its interesting shape and colour. From on top of the platform, you will have the pleasant view of trees and greenery and over the edge, the city of London from 11 floors high. From ground level however, you will look up to see something that resembles a place where people do their business.
Eagle-eyed people took to Reddit to share their feelings.
One said: “The City of London’s tallest skyscraper could look like a toilet seat in the sky.”
Another said: “The bankers have been s**tting on us in private for so long, I guess they just decided to make it public.”
One witty Reddit user asked: “Maybe it’s a representation of the trickle-down economy?”
1 Undershaft is due to be completed in 2029.
