One-in-a-billion’ spherical egg goes underneath the hammer for £200 – after fortunate man spontaneously purchased the merchandise after downing a number of pints
A lucky man has been counting his blessings as he bought a ‘one-in-a-billion’ spherical egg after downing a few pints only for it to pick up £200 at auction.
Ed Pownell purchased the egg for £150 and donated it to the Iuventas Foundation – a charity that provides mentoring, life coaching and mental health support to young people across Oxfordshire.
The native of Lambourn in Berkshire described his buy as ‘money well spent’ though he detailed how the charity initially through the donation was a joke before putting it on sale.
Rozz Rapp, from the foundation, told the BBC local news: ‘We’re delighted and thrilled the egg sold as it means we can continue to do what we are doing.’
She said the egg was just one of many items in the auction for the charity. The total raised was £5,000.
Ms Rapp added: ‘The money raised will help 13 to 25-year-olds struggling with their mental health.
‘It will enable us to reach more youths who are needing support or are on long waiting lists.’
David Miller, who works for Thomson Roddick Callan auction house where the hen’s egg was previously sold, said round eggs were thought to be a ‘one-in-a-billion’ occurrence.

The egg was first discovered by a woman in Ayr, Scotland, who found it in a box in her local supermarket.
News of the sale comes after an Asda shopper discovered a similar spherical egg in her weekly shop.
It was discovered by a woman from Ayr in Scotland, who spotted it in a box of 15 from Asda’s Just Essentials range that she purchased at her local supermarket.
Speaking ahead of the sale, Thomson Roddick Callan auction manager David Miller had said:
‘The chance of this happening is one in a billion. The lady who purchased the egg was curious when she came across it and phoned Thomson Roddick Callan for advice and we put it into our next auction.
‘Let’s hope that it brings an eggcellent price when it goes under the hammer!’
In 2015, a ‘perfectly spherical’ egg laid by a chicken in a garden in Latchingdon, Essex, fetched £480 on eBay which was donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
