Britain’s ‘worst zoo’ lastly closes after a whole bunch of animal deaths and keeper mauled
WARNING, DISTRESSING IMAGES: Animal lovers rejoiced after a zoo, known for their supposedly unhappy animals and a scathing ’cause for concern’ rating, closed permanently years after a tiger mauled a keeper to death
A zoo has been shut down after years of cruelty allegations and the deaths of several animals.
After being dubbed the “worst zoo in Britain,” South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria is closing its doors. They released the shock announcement over the weekend, which has been met with delight by animal lovers. The millionaire founder, David Gill, has been at the receiving end of plenty of criticism during recent times, with the Dalton-in-Furness attraction being plagued with negativity due to several animal deaths.
Previously, they were fined a whopping £255,000 after a keeper was mauled to death by a tiger. In 2017, things seem to take a turn as they gained a new license as Gill agreed to completely leave the business.
However, the zoo could not escape negativity as photos from inside the zoo showed dead and injured animals from inside. These animals included a capybara which was littered with cuts after reportedly being in close range with another animal and fighting.
Another photo also showed a zebra in a small cage with its hoof stuck in the bars. The zoo also came under fire when a work experience student was left alone with a dangerous animal. An inspection declared the attraction as a “major cause for concern.”
Animal lovers and conservation groups were delighted with the news, and took to social media to share their joy. According to the Daily Mail, Chris Lewis, manager at wildlife charity Born Free said “While we are pleased to see today’s announcement, exact details on the future of the animals and the site itself remain unclear.
“Born Free urges all parties to work together to ensure the welfare of the animals remains paramount until a time when appropriate and suitable homes can be secured for them.”
Animal fans took to Facebook to share their thoughts on the zoo and well wishes for the animals. One wrote: “I feel sorry for the animals and hope they are rehomed and not ethanised.” Another added: “I’m sad to hear this but following a visit in August I understand why.”
A third noted: “Good! It was rubbish and the animals looked so unhappy. The grounds were not looked after either. Hopefully the animals will go to a much better place.” A fourth commenter, who clearly was not a fan of the zoo, simply penned: “Good.”
