Mo Salah delivers message to Liverpool supporters on his future after newest heroics in comeback win over Leicester – as Reds boss Arne Slot insists ‘we do not discuss contracts’

Mohamed Salah gave a swift response to the latest question on his ongoing contractual uncertainty after scoring in Liverpool‘s 3-1 win over Leicester City. 

The 32-year-old notched his 16th goal of the campaign to clinch victory for Arne Slot‘s side, who moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League after Chelsea‘s defeat earlier in the day. 

Salah is one of three Liverpool stars, along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with contracts expiring at the end of the campaign, who will be free to speak to foreign clubs from January 1.

The Egyptian, who sent the Reds fanbase into a frenzy last month when he claimed he had not been contacted over a new deal, refused to divulge the current state of negotiations when asked on Boxing Day. 

Instead, he offered season’s greetings and looked ahead to the next time he’ll have the chance to play in front of supporters at Anfield – a showdown against Manchester United on January 5. 

‘I want to tell [the fans] Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,’ Salah told Amazon Prime. ‘And I’ll see them in the next game here.’

Any fan hoping for clarity from the striker were left similarly disappointed by the comments of his manager, who has returned every question about contracts since his summer arrival with a straight bat. 

‘We don’t talk about contracts in public,’ Arne Slot said after guiding the Reds to their 13th Premier League win in 17 matches. 

‘This is something for the players and [sporting director] Richard Hughes and it’s not up to me to talk about those situations in public. 

‘But it’s clear that Mo [Salah] again, had a good game, Van Dijk had a very good game, Trent for the most part was very good, one or two exceptions, but especially second half really good. That we can talk about, not about the contracts.’

The Dutchman’s stony response belied his generally buoyant mood after witnessing his side take a commanding lead in the title race. 

The Reds recovered from a early scare against the Foxes, who took the lead after only six minutes, with goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Salah.

Liverpool’s victory saw them extend their lead over Chelsea at the top and widen the gap to defending champions Manchester City to 14-point chasm. Slot’s men have also played a game fewer than their rivals. 

Arsenal have the chance to close the gap to six points when they welcome Ipswich to the Emirates on Friday night.
