Conor McGregor threatens to purchase two soccer golf equipment however cup winners hit again after gaffe
The UFC fighter’s profile was tarnished after he was found guilty of assault in a civil case where he was accused of rape and ordered to pay the victim more than £200,000
Conor McGregor has threatened to buy two Irish football teams but cup winners lay feelings bare. The controversial MMA fighter, who was recently found guilty in a civil rape case, took to social media to celebrate his cousin winning the prestigious trophy with Drogheda United FC.
But the 36-year-old made a rookie error – he mistakenly tagged the Drogs’ arch rival, Dundalk FC, in the Instagram post which featured pints of his Forged Irish Stout. The Claret and Blue Army were not impressed and released a statement distancing themselves from the Dublin-native, who was nominated for the Daily Star’s Bellen D’Or award.
McGregor was ordered to pay Nikita Hand more than £200,000 after he was found guilty of assaulting her in a civil case before the Irish High Court. The UFC star’s whiskey brand ditched him and supermarkets pulled his drinks from shelves in the wake of the verdict.
McGregor and his cousin Warren Davis were out celebrating Drogheda’s win in one of the UFC star’s pubs when he took to social media to share the win with his followers. “Yup the gaf(Irish slang for house)! FAI cup in the house! Congrats my cuz @warrend02 on winning the fai trophy with @dundalkfc!
“That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy. One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Dundalk, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!”
McGregor also took to X, whose owner Elon Musk has teased followers about buying Liverpool FC, to ask how much it would cost to buy an Irish football team. He wrote alongside a picture of the FAI trophy: “How much is it to buy a League of Ireland team? I might buy two”.
Yesterday evening, Drogheda FC distanced themselves from the controversial fighter. Their statement read: “A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup.
“Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals. Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.”
