Everton sack boss Sean Dyche hours earlier than large FA cup recreation
Everton have sacked Sean Dyche just hours before FA Cup clash.
The Toffees are hovering precariously above the Premier League relegation zone after suffering another defeat over the weekend. Dyche’s side were toothless as they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, with calls from fans for the 53-year-old to be sacked.
Everton have been hapless in front of goal, with their strike against Manchester City on Boxing Day the only time they’ve found the net in the last five games. And new owners, the Friedkin Group, have decided to take a big risk heading into the New Year and just hours before they face Peterborough United in the FA Cup third round at Goodison Park. Captain Seamus Coleman and former left back Leighton Baines are set to take charge of the tie.
The Toffees are currently one point above the drop zone in 16th, with Wolves and Ipswich both on 16 points in 17th and 18th place respectively. However, Wolves can leapfrog Everton if they beat Nottingham Forest at home on Monday night.
Everton’s next game comes in the FA Cup against Peterborough at the weekend before they resume their survival bid when they welcome Aston Villa to Goodison Park on January 15. They still have a game in hand over their rivals – the rearranged Merseyside derby at home against league leaders Liverpool on February 11.
Former Burnley manager Dyche replaced Frank Lampard as Everton manager in January 2023. He defeated then league leaders Arsenal in his first game in charge, before saving them from relegation on the last day of the season.
The following season, Everton were hit with a 10-point deduction, later reduced to six points on appeal, for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. Yet Dyche managed to avoid relegation again with a 15th place finish, following a 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby – Everton’s first home win at Goodison Park against Liverpool since 2010.
The Friedkin Group completed its takeover of Everton last month in a deal for 99.5% of the club is believed to be worth in excess of £400m. The Texas-based group is led by chairman Dan Friedkin and also owns Italian Serie A club Roma.
