Man Utd switch information: Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd have ‘benefit’ in Viktor Gyokeres pursuit over Arsenal
A former teammate of striking superstar Viktor Gyokeres believes Manchester United will beat Arsenal in the transfer race to sign the Swedish star
Brighton icon Glenn Murray believes Manchester United have the advantage over Arsenal when it comes to signing striker hotshot Viktor Gyokeres.
The 26-year-old Swedish striker has developed into one of the best strikers currently in world football. It was Ruben Amorim who brought Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon from Coventry City for £20m.
Now, with the likes of Marcus Rashford looking for a way out and United failing to win games, Amorim is looking for a striker to bolster his attacking options. And it is the connection between the Portuguese boss and Gyokeres that Murray believes will win United the transfer battle.
He told 10bet: “Now the next step is one of the big leagues in Europe. Hopefully that is the Premier League.
“Obviously, with his old manager being here, it’s quite likely that if he does decide to come here, Manchester United are going to be his preferred destination.”
Murray was Brighton’s first-pick striker when Gyokeres was with the Seagulls. The Swedish striker never really got a chance at Brighton, but little did they know, just a few years later, he would become one of the best in the world.
“He was a young lad at the club and was he up to the level?” Murray continued. “Well, the manager didn’t think he was up to the level.
“We were in a squad where we were in survival mode, and you couldn’t really bring lads in to develop them. In all honest, it was one of those situations where he made that hard decision to leave the Premier League and in hindsight, it was the right decision to leave.”
United have scored 27 goals from 22 games – nowhere near where they would like to be in regards to their hopeful competitors – with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all having 40+.
A striker like Gyokeres would certainly help solve United’s issue in front of goal.
