Darts World No.1 Luke Humphries opened up on his lucrative earnings as he made an honest admission about his finances.

The 2024 world champion, who bagged a cool £500,000 for his victory at Alexandra Palace last year, has amassed nearly £3million in winnings throughout his career. His first significant payday came in 2019 when he was crowned the world youth champion and secured a quarter-final spot at the World Darts Championship, earning him a tidy £50,000.

This achievement not only boosted his bank balance but also his confidence in his potential as a professional darts player. However, Humphries is quick to point out that not all of this money makes it into the athletes’ pockets.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Hour Podcast, he laughed as he revealed how much he and his fellow players actually take home. “Bloody lovely,” he chuckled when asked about his first major payday hitting his bank account. “Really nice! You look at it and think, ‘Jesus! ‘ You’ve got £50,000 that’s just been put in.

“Obviously you have to pay management and tax…but you sort of get 65% of it in the end, maybe 70% if you’re lucky. And it was amazing. You think, ‘This is amazing, £50,000, I want to keep doing this!'”

‘Cool Hand’ has certainly seen his earnings skyrocket in recent years. Humphries won the world title, along with the World Matchplay and Players Championship in 2024, as well as helping England to victory in the World Cup of Darts.

Last year alone, he pocketed over £850,000 in winnings, which is approximately what he’s shelled out for tax and management fees throughout his career. This means Humphries has netted around £2m so far, and that’s before you even factor in sponsorship money.

“You get sponsors coming in then,” he said. “They’re paying you – in those days – £5,000 or £10,000 for each sponsor, and you kind of get £30,000 or £40,000 on your shirt before you’ve even thrown a dart!

“And this was like seven years ago. That’s already your salary without winning anything. So that’s comfortability, whereas now it’s ridiculous, silly money. When you see that half a million from the Worlds, you go, ‘Woah.'”

The prize money at the World Darts Championship jumped by 25% to £500,000 back in 2019. With darts soaring in popularity thanks to the success of Humphries and Luke Littler in particular, it’s likely only a matter of time before the prize pots swell again, and other tournaments are expected to up the payday too.
