Anthony Gordon makes ‘humble’ dig at Arsenal after dumping Mikel Arteta out Carabao Cup
Anthony Gordon couldn’t help but make a savage “humble” dig at Mikel Arteta and Arsenal after they dumped the Gunners out of the Carabao Cup
Anthony Gordon couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Arsenal after dumping the Gunners out of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle were by far the better side on Wednesday evening, as the Gunners melted under the bright lights of St James’ Park. And after Newcastle’s Wembley date was confirmed, Gordon rubbed salt in the wounds.
“It’s important for us to stay humble now,” he told Sky Sports with a cheeky smile.
Arsenal had beaten Manchester City 5-1 over the weekend, and used their five-star performance as a platform to hit back at Erling Haaland’s “stay humble” jibe from earlier in the season.
Myles Lewis-Skelly copied his celebration after scoring the fifth, while Gabriel had celebrated in Haaland’s face after Arsenal broke the deadlock in the second minute. Arsenal fans had even directed a cheeky chant in the direction of the big Norwegian.
“Arsenal fans adding Gordon and Newcastle to the ‘Cup Final’ list,” one fan joked. While a second said: “So the winner of the final now gets to use this line too right? Haaland might have just changed football vocabulary forever…”
“Antony Gordon just said stay humble top draw trolling,” a third posted. And another added: “Anthony Gordon. You have a fan in me!”
While another City, on the wind-up, added: “Humility in triumph – Anthony Gordon’s call to stay grounded is a masterpiece of sportsmanship…”
Gordon added: “We went on a really good run and then we had two results that we didn’t see coming and we didn’t need in our season.
“This was a good game to put us back on track, but I think we need to keep our heads down and focus on what’s in front of us.”
