Championship star despatched off after full time for putting opponent in ‘brawl’
West Brom captain Kyle Bartley was shown a red card after the final whistle of the Baggies’ 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday afternoon
Kyle Bartley was shown a red card for raising his arm to an opponent’s face in the aftermath of West Brom‘s thrilling last-minute Championship victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
The match seemed destined for a draw until Baggies midfielder Jayson Molumby scored a dramatic 96th-minute winner from a corner, triggering wild celebrations.
However, tensions were still high at the final whistle, leading to a clash between both teams. Bartley was spotted squaring up to Svante Ingelsson, and made contact with the Wednesday midfielder’s face with his arm.
Despite protesting his innocence, he was sent off for violent conduct following the incident. The centre-circle brawl and Bartley’s subsequent dismissal marred a significant victory for West Brom, who have climbed to fifth in the Championship table.
Tony Mowbray’s team had taken the lead late in the second half thanks to debutant Adam Armstrong, who joined the Baggies on loan from Southampton on deadline day. Callum Paterson equalised for Sheffield Wednesday in the 93rd minute, but Molumby’s last-gasp goal broke the visitors’ hearts.
Bartley will now be absent for West Brom’s forthcoming matches as they aim to secure their top-six position for the remainder of the season. The Baggies face a challenging home match against Blackburn Rovers in the middle of the week next.
West Brom then head to Alex Neil’s Millwall, who are on a four-game winning run, including beating Championship leaders Leeds United in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.
