George Mills is targeting European and world medals next month after claiming his first national title in Birmingham on Sunday.
The son of former England footballer Danny Mills took down a 39-year-old meeting record in winning the 3,000 metres in 7min 40.16sec at the UK Indoor Championships.
Mills fended off two-time defending champion James West to seal his spot at the European Indoors in Apeldoorn, Netherlands and the World Indoors in Nanjing, China.
And the 25-year-old believes he can go on to claim a podium place at both major events, to back up the silver he claimed at last summer’s European Championships in Rome.
‘I compete to win medals now,’ said Mills, who also broke the British indoor 3,000m record earlier this month. ‘I got a taste for it in Rome last year and I want to win more.’
Elsewhere at the Utilita Arena, Olympic bronze medallist Georgia Hunter Bell defended her 1500m title and Neil Gourley set a new championship record in the men’s race.

Former Olympic and world medallist Laura Muir was upset by Hannah Nuttall in the 3,000m, while heptathlon world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson came last in the shot put after finishing third in her 60m hurdles heat on Saturday.
World indoor pole vault champion Molly Caudery was a late withdrawal from the event with a calf injury but expects to be fit for Apeldoorn and Nanjing.
