Ange Postecoglou was caught in another angry confrontation with Tottenham fans after his side’s 2-0 defeat by Fulham on Sunday.

Spurs were swiftly brought back down to earth after their successes in Europe in midweek, as goals from Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon condemned them to their 15th league loss of the term.

The visitors were outclassed by their London rivals who moved to within three points of fifth-place Manchester City in the hotly contested race for Champions League qualification, while Spurs languish in 14th place.

Their latest failure proved too much for one supporter to handle and they voiced their displeasure when the Australian walked back towards the dressing room. However, Postecoglou was unwilling to let the swipe pass and confronted the fan, promoting a commotion that attracted players and support staff.

The fan could be heard saying ‘what was that?’, at least three times, by which point Postecoglou had stopped in his tracks and faced the supporter.

Tottenham stars Djed Spence and Mathys Tel both attempted to usher their manager away from the conflict before Postecoglou replied: ‘Behave yourself, you’re a young man just have some values okay.’

Tel then approached the fan and added: ‘Respect’. Spurs support staff then continued to urge for calm from the supporter, though their comments were inaudible in the footage that has been circulating on social media.

On Sunday, another clip showed Tel, on loan from Bayern Munich, attempting to calm the animated away section at Craven Cottage who were directing chants towards the under-fire Spurs boss.

Tel was heard telling supporters that they ‘need to be together’ although his words fell on deaf ears with the ace told that performances ‘aren’t good enough’.

One fan, who claimed to be one of the men involved, gave given his version of events to Mail Sport, explaining: ‘After angrily shouting at the players, Maddison pointed at us and gave us a thumbs up before heading into the dressing room.

‘Only after we continued shouting did Tel come over to us, hopping over the advertising boards before exchanging with me and the rest of the boys I with.

‘He said ‘we need to be together,’ and then I said to him ‘it’s not good enough’, which he agreed with before heading back over the advertising boards and into the dressing room.

‘It says it all when a 19-year-old loanee is the one to come over to the fans and be rather apologetic, whilst the rest of the leadership team kept their distance and clapped.

‘Maddison, on the other hand, came close but didn’t give the time of day to speak to the fans shouting at him, instead giving a response that felt insulting to fans who spend hard-earned money to follow the team all around the country and over Europe.’

Other punters were heard shouting X-rated remarks including ‘get him out’, an apparent dig at Postecoglou as Spurs’ horror campaign continues.

The interaction lasted for around 30 seconds before Tel clambered back over the advertising hoardings and onto the pitch. He then made his way to the tunnel.

Sunday’s incident is not the first time Postecoglou has clashed with his own fans since arriving in north London last summer. In December, he became embroiled in an angry exchange after Spurs’ defeat by Bournemouth.

Fans jeered because Postecoglou hung back behind his players when they went across the pitch to applaud the fans after the game.

The volume of dissent increased when he turned for the tunnel without making his way any closer.

Postecoglou then changed his mind, turned back and walked all the way across to confront the Spurs fans, where they booed and one or two hurled some choice insults.

‘They gave me some direct feedback, which is taken on board,’ he said. ‘I didn’t like what was being said because I’m a human being but you’ve for to cop it.’

Tottenham take on Chelsea in their next Premier League fixture after the international break, though, in truth, their domestic exploits no longer carry much importance until the end of the season.

Spurs’ season – and Postecoglou’s future – will be defined by their progress in the Europa League, which continued with a tricky two-legged quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt on April 10 and April 17.
