A “greasy spoon” café known for its whopping £35 breakfast bap challenge has come under fire after the owner labelled morbidly obese individuals as “fatties”. The Belfast Breakfast Baps cafe’s Facebook page sparked outrage with an image of a mobility scooter.

The accompanying caption stated: “If you’re in one of these because you’re morbidly obese please know you are not disabled you’re fat and probably not very useful. IT MOST DEFINITELY IS YOUR FAULT. Thyroid issues are workable and you are taking away resources from those who actually deserve not .”

Further insulting remarks included: “How about park the mobility scooter and walk fatty and maybe even eventually run.” Adding to the irony, the cafe boasts a £35 ‘Titanic Breakfast Bap’ eating challenge.

Diners face the daunting task of devouring a gigantic bap loaded with eight eggs, eight rashers of bacon, eight sausages, eight portions of black pudding, along with beans and mushrooms within a mere 45 minutes. Those who triumph in this belly-busting challenge aren’t charged a penny.

However, 39-year-old café owner Mark Young stood by his controversial statements and said he wasn’t targeting the disabled. He declared: “It’s a free world, and critics are welcome to abuse away, it’s not doing me any harm really.”

Despite this, health experts have condemned his remarks, with calls from some corners for a boycott of his establishment. One such critic is Professor Paul Gately, CEO of Obesity UK, who expressed his shock at the post.

He commented: “Fundamentally it’s incredibly discriminatory and it really feels it’s attention grabbing at the expense of people suffering from a disease.”

“Individuals dealing with obesity face prejudice daily. This situation illustrates how certain individuals view those with obesity, despite the fact that many countries acknowledge it as a disease. I just don’t think that’s a suitable way to do business at all.”

On Facebook, users have called for a boycott of the cafe. One commenter stated: “Seems you’re not aware but there are disabled folks who’ve gained weight due to their disability, not laziness and the likes, but from pain and the inability to keep on top of exercise because of it.

“Some require those scooters. Some don’t even bother with those scooters and hide away in home instead of living their lives because of comments like the entirety of your shit post. You’re doing more harm to people than the good you think you are.”

Another user added: “Thyroid conditions are serious auto-immune and endocrine medical issues. Please do make jokes at the expense of people with serious medical conditions.”
