Jockey accused of homicide after man, 71, dies following city centre ‘altercation’

A jockey has been charged with murder after a man, 71, died following an “altercation” in a town centre.

Levi Williams, 25, was arrested earlier this month after an alleged brawl between four people in Newmarket, Suffolk

Police were called to Newmarket High Street at 3.40pm on Saturday, March 8 following reports of an altercation, with two men being later taken to hospital.

One of the males, 45, was discharged from hospital in Cambridge later that evening. The 71-year-old man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but passed away on Tuesday (March 18).

Williams has been charged with murder, and he is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (March 19).

Another man, 23, has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and a 45-year-old man held on suspicion of affray. Both have been bailed.

Williams was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, before he was too bailed. He was re-arrested and questioned at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre following the man’s death.

Suffolk Police said: “A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder, after a man who sustained serious injuries following an incident in Newmarket earlier this month died in hospital.

“A 23-year-old man, who was also arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, and a 45-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of affray, both remain on police bail until June 5 and June 9 respectively.”

Williams, who is apprenticed to trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam, last competed in a race in Wolverhampton in May 2023.

He has ridden 12 winners from 156 rides – with his four winners for Simon Dow the most he has ridden for any trainer.
