Liverpool inflict Rangers’ biggest ever Ibrox defeat – and 2nd-half stats tell full story

Liverpool ran riot at Ibrox on Wednesday evening to hand Rangers their biggest ever defeat at Ibrox with Mohamed Salah scoring the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history.

Jurgen Klopp’s men came from behind to register one of the best 45 minute performances in the history of the competition – matching Rangers’ biggest ever defeat of 6-0 which came away to Real Madrid in 1963.

Taking a look at the statistics from the second-half alone, Liverpool scored six times from a total of 12 shots – eight of which were on target.

On the flip side, Rangers failed to have a shot at goal other than a single blocked effort despite having 46% of the possession against Klopp’s resurgent side.

Liverpool fans might well have expected the worst after conceding having gone into the fixture on the back of a Premier League defeat against Arsenal that left them 14 points from top spot.

With James Tavernier robbing Fabio Carvalho of possession, Scott Arfield took the ball and slotted past Alisson after 17 minutes to the delight of Giovanni van Bronckhorst – but it was level just seven minutes later.

Mohamed Salah destroyed the Champions League hat-trick record

With Roberto Firmino’s brace cancelling out Arfield’s opener, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott also scored either side of Salah’s six-minute treble.

Salah has also now scored the most Champions League goals for an English club in the competition, surpassing the 36 managed by both Didier Drogba for Chelsea and Sergio Aguero for Manchester City.

The result has given Liverpool fans a huge confidence boost ahead of their Premier League visit of Manchester City on Sunday.

Dejected players of Rangers had no answers for Liverpool’s heroics

Klopp said after the game: “We had a really positive half-time talk.

“We wanted more in the second half. Clearly, it worked out. It’s the best we could have asked for. I’m really pleased.

“The goals we scored were exceptional. it’s a night where things worked out for us. It changes the mood. We all know who is coming on Sunday [Manchester City]. That will be different, but it’s better to go in with the feeling from tonight.”
