Brazil legend Ronaldo has revealed that one of his former team-mates once drank 100 bottles of wine in just two weeks.

Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest ever strikers after leading Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002, while he was also part of the squad that lifted the trophy eight years earlier in the US.

He was also known for his party lifestyle away from the pitch, but has now named the one player that even he couldn’t keep up with when it came to a drinking session.

Ronaldo played alongside Vampeta for Brazil, PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan, but the World Cup Golden Boot winner has claimed that didn’t stop his team-mate emptying his wine cellar when he was out of town.

‘He (Vampeta) stayed at my house, and I went to Brazil,’ Ronaldo told Charla Podcast. ‘He had a wine cellar with 100 bottles, and he drank them all in two weeks!

‘He finished all the bottles and opened more boxes he had in the apartment until he found one that was special. It was a 1976 bottle that I bought at a restaurant in Paris for 10,000 euros.

‘He and his friends opened this bottle and gave us each a plastic cup. He said it was hot and put ice in it! I couldn’t believe it because, as I said, it was just a wine for display.’

After his heroic performances for Brazil in 2002, Ronaldo sealed his dream move to Real Madrid, and he went on to score 104 goals in 177 appearances across a five-year spell at the club.

But he has admitted he was not always fully focused on football, as he would treat himself to trips around Europe to party in between matches.

‘I was at all of them (parties),’ he said. ‘I played on Saturday and then went to Paris. I spent Sunday in Paris and went to the party that night.

‘At seven in the morning, I took the plane to Madrid and arrived at nine in the morning with training at 10. I did this many times.

‘In the city you play in, you either have a party at home or you’re dead. So I branched out and travelled.

‘I’ve always been one to organise parties and make sure to make everyone happy.’
