Energy crisis pushing thousands more households onto prepayment meters as they struggle to pay their bills
Pay as you go: In the six months to March, 60,000 new top-up meters were installed
The energy crisis is pushing thousands more households onto prepayment meters, putting vulnerable people at risk of being disconnected this winter.
In the six months to March, 60,000 new top-up meters were installed, according to comparison site Uswitch.
Households who regularly fall behind on their electricity or gas bills are often moved onto prepayment meters to stop them getting into further debt.
But pay-as-you-go meters cost an average £50 more annually in standing charges than paying by direct debit, leaving thousands at risk of being cut off.
