Terrified villagers dialed 999 in horror fearing a mass murderer was on the loose after a trail of ‘blood’ appeared on the nearby main road.
After receiving multiple emergency calls, police officers rushed to the scene in North Yorkshire with blue lights and sirens blaring as scene-of-crime detectives prepared their kit to take swab samples and check for DNA.

Police could not find a criminal. Instead, they discovered the culprit was a vegetable villain.

The ‘blood’ turned out to be gallons of beetroot juice, spilled from a lorry as it made its way down the country road.
The trail of sticky, red liquid had run along the road up to Derwent Bridge, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The service said that ‘after a bit of investigating’ it was identified as beetroot, before being washed away.
