Inside the ‘UK’s greatest Christmas market’ – with fewer crowds than Winter Wonderland
When it comes to the UK’s top Christmas markets, big cities like Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and London likely come to mind.
But for those looking for smaller crowds, it could pay off to look further afield.
In the heart of the Peak District is Chatsworth House, a stately home that transforms into a sparkling Christmas market for the festive season each year.
Chatsworth is just a 90-minute drive from Manchester, 40 minutes from Sheffield and just under two hours from Birmingham.
Unlike some of the country’s top-rated Christmas markets and events, entry to Chatsworth Christmas market is free and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
With 100 market stalls offering a wide range of Christmas gifts and decorations, live music and seasonal food and drink, it promises to put you in the festive spirit.
Just a 10-minute drive from Bakewell, the birthplace of the Bakewell tart, you can expect plenty of locally-made food and drink options, from Buxton Blue to homemade jellies and conserves.

With an overall rating of four stars based on more than 9,000 TripAdvisor reviews, it’s easy to see why people love this market.
One five-star review reads: ‘The Christmas market was probably the best we’ve ever been to, with an amazing variety of stalls and goods. We ended up spending nearly six hours there, which went far too quickly!’
It seems the only drawback to swapping a big-name Christmas market for Chatsworth is the cost of parking.
It costs £25 per car to park at Chatsworth House Christmas Markets, which can be a steep fare if there are only a couple of you visiting for the day.
However, if you visit after 3pm, the price drops to £15. The market is open until December 14 and parking must be pre-booked.
If you’re looking for another festive activity to fill your day, Christmas at Chatsworth: The Enchanted Garden runs until January 6, 2026.
Guests are invited to explore 20 extraordinary spaces transformed with light, sound, and shadow play.
Prices for adults are £36 and £10 for children, including a charity donation.

It comes as food at some of the most popular Christmas markets has come under scrutiny for being overpriced and cashing in on viral food trends.
One visitor to Christmas in Leicester Square Market revealed she paid an eye-watering £16 for a pot of strawberries with a ‘drizzle’ of chocolate.
Traders have also been accused of trying to make a quick buck on mass market goods imported from overseas by selling them to Christmas shoppers with a huge mark-up.
However, Christmas markets remain a popular festive activity for Brits and provide an essential boost to UK high streets.
