Heating error can ‘waste a whole lot of kilos annually’ on power payments

As we turn up the heating, it is important to make sure we are not wasting any heat and driving up our energy bills

Now that winter has arrived, many of us will be cranking up our central heating to keep our homes cosy. However, with energy bills remaining steep, we want to ensure we’re not squandering any warmth.

Specialists have cautioned that there are several frequent blunders many of us are committing that could be inflating our bills without us realising.

Fortunately, these errors are preventable and can halt the surge in household energy expenses.

Energy efficiency specialist Jamie Burns explained: “Most of us think we’re being smart with our heating, but a few small bad habits can quietly waste hundreds of pounds each year.

“Getting to know how your system really works can make a huge difference to both comfort and cost,” the expert from reliability firm Ailsa added.

Jamie encouraged households to ensure they aren’t warming up unoccupied areas. This might include guest bedrooms that aren’t currently being used or corridors that you simply walk through, reports the Express.

Running the heating in spaces you’re not utilising can actually diminish the flow to the rooms where you do require warmth. Therefore, it’s crucial to remember to simply switch off the radiators in these vacant rooms.

Another frequent error is inadequate timing and management of the thermostat.

Jamie cautioned that leaving the heating running continuously or operating identical schedules in every room will cost more than implementing zoning and timed programmes.

Once again, if there are areas you don’t require heating, then ensure the radiators are switched off in these rooms and aren’t included in the schedule. For the rooms you’re heating, make sure the warmth cannot escape.

Unsealed letterboxes, chimney draughts and bare loft hatches can all allow the heat to flee.

“With energy prices still high, every small improvement adds up,” Jamie explained.

“Understanding how to get the best from your heating can make your home feel warmer and your bills lighter.

“It’s not about big, expensive upgrades; it’s about being smarter with what you already have. A few thoughtful adjustments can make this winter far more comfortable without the extra cost.”
