Holyhead Terminal 5 closed after ferry ‘hits’ port in extreme climate situations
Holyhead port’s Terminal 5 has been closed as a precautionary measure after a ferry berthing incident during severe weather, almost exactly one year after Storm Darragh caused chaos there
Terminal 5 at Holyhead port has been shut down after it was reportedly struck by a ferry in “severe weather conditions”. The incident happened on Friday December 5, leading to the closure of Terminal 5 as a “precautionary measure.”
The incident mirrors one from nearly a year ago when the port had to suspend sailings for several weeks due to damage inflicted on Terminal 3 during Storm Darragh, , reports North Wales Live.
Under normal circumstances, Stena ships utilise Terminal 5 while Irish Ferries operate from Terminal 3. For the time being, the two ferry operators are sharing a single berth.
A representative for Stena Line Ports Ltd explained: “Due to severe weather conditions on Friday, December 5, a berthing incident occurred at Terminal 5.
“Current weather conditions prevent a full assessment of the berth structure, therefore as a precautionary measure, we have temporarily closed Terminal 5 to ensure safety.
“The terminal will remain closed until all structures have been thoroughly inspected and cleared for normal operations.
“This assessment will take place when the weather conditions will improve. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however the health and safety of our colleagues and customers remains our first priority.”
