Brighton reserve goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen joins Vitesse Arnhem on loan for the season

Brighton goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen has moved to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old joined Albion from Ajax last summer and made his debut in last season’s FA Cup third-round win at West Brom

He spent the remainder of the campaign on loan at Belgian side Oostende and was called up to the Holland squad June following an injury to Tim Krul.

Seagulls goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts told the club website: ‘This is a great opportunity for Kjell to continue his development and play regularly.

‘He was called up to the Dutch senior squad this summer and this means he has the chance of regular game time ahead of this year’s World Cup.

‘We wish Kjell well for the season ahead, and working with Gordon Greer and the loans department we will monitor his progress during the season.’

The goalkeeper is highly rated and Brighton hope first team football will see him develop further

The 6ft8 goalkeeper began his career in the Dutch second tier with FC Emmen with whom he made 30 appearances.

From there he moved onto Ajax in 2019 where he made four first team appearances across a two-year stay with the Dutch giants.

Having joined Brighton in 2021, the former Holland youth international, the ‘keeper made his debut before being sent out on loan to Belgian outfit Oostende for the second half of last season.
