Chelsea owner Todd Boehly ‘definitely tempted’ into making Cristiano Ronaldo offer

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is “definitely tempted” to make an offer to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

The Blues are amongst the clubs to have been offered a chance to sign the veteran forward during the current transfer window as he looks to secure Champions League football this season. However, Chelsea are understood to have previously turned down the chance to sign him, with manager Thomas Tuchel not keen on adding Ronaldo to his squad.

However, chairman Boehly, who has played a key role in the club’s transfer business this summer, is said still be open to the idea of signing the 37-year-old.

Reporter Dean Jones told GiveMeSport: “He’s definitely tempted to make an offer if no-one else is going in for Ronaldo and I can understand why, to some extent.

“But when you see the way that Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz play in that frontline, Ronaldo just doesn’t fit, so I’m on Tuchel’s side on that one.”

It was Tuchel who rejected the opportunity to sign Ronaldo earlier in the window after Chelsea and a number of other European clubs were offered the chance to strike a deal for the forward.

Ronaldo has been linked with a departure from United all summer due to his desire to play in the Champions League, with United missing out on qualification for the tournament after finishing sixth last season.

Back-to-back defeats for the Red Devils so far this season have further exacerbated Ronaldo’s situation at Old Trafford, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having made his first start of the campaign in Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing away to Brentford.

Boehly remains a fan of the forward, though, and has been crucial to Chelsea’s business this summer. Having led the consortium which bought the club back in May, the American later made himself the club’s chairman.

Chelsea have since been busy in the transfer market, spending just under £170million on Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina.

The Blues remain linked with further additions too, with Everton youngster Anthony Gordon the latest player Chelsea are rumoured to be chasing.
