Hey Siri! The hilarious moment commentator accidentally prompts his iPhone virtual assistant

Tampa Bay Rays‘ local broadcast of the Yankees game was interrupted by an unwanted guest Monday night, when Jose Siri’s arrival at the plate accidentally prompted iPhone‘s virtual assistant to get involved.

In an issue that – we assume – is not a first for the Rays center fielder, the commentator called him up to the plate by saying ‘Jose Siri’, which the iPhone appeared to mistake for the greeting ‘Okay Siri’, which sets off an automatic reply.

The iPhone, caught loud and clear by the commentator’s microphone, said: ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that… could you say it again?’, leaving fans watching on TV baffled by the unexpected addition to the broadcast.

Siri’s (right) arrival did prompt an unexpected guest in the commentary booth, though

And there was plenty more reason for Rays fans watching at home to smile later on in the evening, as they beat the AL East-leading Yankees 4-0 in the Bronx.

The shock score included a run from the aforementioned Siri – baseball player, not iPhone virtual assistant – as well as David Peralta, Roman Quinn and Taylor Walls.

It was only 1-0 heading into the top of the ninth, with it all still to play for at Yankee Stadium, but the Rays made sure of the victory with an additional three runs, which the home side could not respond to.

When Siri was called up, the commentator’s iPhone launched the virtual assistant by accident

It was a bad night for the Yankees as their poor form and lack of runs continued in the Bronx

The Yankees are now on a terrible 2-10 record in their previous 12 games, ahead of a horror schedule with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets both visiting the Bronx in the next week.

They lead the Rays by 10 games in the AL East, but with three more games in the four-game set, that could be cut to seven by next week.

The Rays, meanwhile, are 61-53 for the season and go into tonight’s game with a three-game win streak and a 6-4 record in their last 10.
