Five footballers who celebrated by twerking – from Alex Morgan to ex-Prem ace

Thanks to Miley Cyrus’ outrageous VMAs antics, twerking has taken over the world in the last decade.

Sport has generally shied away from the sexually suggestive dance move, though, with the NFL even going so far as to ban its players from pulling it off after scoring a touchdown when Antonio Brown did so back in 2016.

With kids in the crowd and watching on from home, a mid-game twerk isn’t seen as an appropriate action from a sporting role model. But the following five footballers have said “screw that” and thrown it back in celebration anyway.

Kansas City Current star Lo’eau LaBonta hit the headlines at the weekend for a twerk celebration with a twist. The American midfielder netted a late penalty to draw her side level against Angel City, but wheeled away clutching at her hamstring.

However, the apparent injury was all a ruse, with LaBonta swiftly turning around and shaking her bum to the crowd. She burst out into laughter with her team-mates, who were clearly impressed with the ploy.

Sean Morrison

Of all the players to pull out a twerk, you wouldn’t think it would be a 6’4″ centre-back. But Cardiff defender Sean Morrison defied expectations last year after netting in their 3-1 win over Millwall.

Explaining his rather rigid form, Morrison joked after the match: “I was twerking out some stiffness in my back! One of the boys sent me something on Instagram of a non-league player doing it.

“I said that next time I score I’ll copy his celebration. It is the first time I’ve done anything like that – I hope it catches on. Let’s make it a hashtag.”

Carlos Tevez

Tevez was a pioneer of the twerking movement in football

Former Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez was somewhat of a twerking addict. He’d often get his hips moving after bagging in the Premier League.

‘Doing the Tevez’ actually became an online movement and the celebration made its way into EA Sports’ FIFA franchise. We can only hope he’s since visited Ass-shakers Anonymous and got the help he needs.

Kei Kamara

It was going well for Kamara – until he was booked

While others have got away with twerking on the pitch, Kei Kamara wasn’t so lucky as New England Revolution beat Montreal Impact in October 2016. The ex-Middlesbrough striker gave it some serious shaking after making it 3-0, but was soon fuming.

He was booked by the referee, with FIFA rules stating a yellow card can be shown if a celebration is deemed provocative or inflammatory. Montreal didn’t take being twerked on to heart, as they signed Kamara earlier this year.

Alex Morgan

US star Alex Morgan twerked to her heart’s content after they won their second straight World Cup in 2019. She was seen dancing away on the Instagram story of goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

“Oh dear, oh dear, she dirty,” Harris could be heard narrating as her team-mate wiggled away, before Morgan pulled off a full 360-degree twerk to send her into hysterics.
