When looking at a prospective transfer move, England might seem unappealing to a travelled footballer on the continent.
These shores are hardly famous for their food – France and Italy definitely have the edge over English culinary delights like eel pie. And the weather, well let’s just say it rains more than it shines from Southampton to Newcastle.
So it’s hardly unsurprising that some moves have fallen through after WAGs of footballers have put their foot down on a move to England. From Angel Di Maria’s wife to Frenkie de Jong’s girlfriend, Daily Star Sport looks at WAGs who hated or would hate England…
Angel Di Maria – Jorgelina Cardoso
Di Maria’s spell at Manchester United was littered with troubles, on and off the pitch, and his wife Jorgelina Cardoso has also revealed she hated her stay up north.
“It was always horrible! We came home and I said: ‘If you’re ever transferred, make sure it’s anywhere in the world but England’,” she recently revealed. “People are all weird. You walk around and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you. The food is disgusting.
“It was horrible, so horrible. I just told him, ‘Darling, I want to kill myself, it’s nighttime at two o’clock’.”

Frenkie de Jong – Mikky Kiemeney
When Frenkie de Jong packed up his life and moved to Barcelona to chase his dream – he was joined by stunning former hockey player Mikky Kiemeney.
While life on the pitch hasn’t gone exactly to plan for De Jong, who was tipped for superstardom at Ajax, he and Mikky have settled in when in Catalonia. Even when United came calling with a mega-money offer, the duo wouldn’t budge.
According to The Telegraph, Mikky was determined to stay in Barcelona more so than De Jong.
Alvaro Morata – Alice Campello
When Alvaro Morata’s spell at Chelsea came to an end, he wasn’t the only happy member of the Morata clan.
After leaving, the Spaniard said: “It seems like the obvious thing to say to gain points with the fans but my family and I were coming from a really bad time in London. Here we have regained our happiness.”
However, this summer Morata has been linked with a move back to these shores with United interested in his services. Morata is back in Spain after spending two years out on loan at Juventus in Italy.
Thomas Muller – Lisa Muller
Thomas Muller was once close to joining the Red Devils, until his wife Lisa Muller pulled the plug on the move.
In 2015, then-United boss Louis van Gaal revealed: “In 2015 it would have been possible if his wife had been a little more open to a transfer abroad. At least that was the reason Thomas gave my assistant Marcel Bout, who had had all the conversations with him, why the transfer had been rejected.
Lisa is a star in her own right, and the stunning brunette is a champion dressage rider.
Mauro Icardi – Wanda Nara
The Premier League has been deprived of the planet’s most famous WAG as Wanda Nara ‘won’t swap Paris for Tyneside’.
Nouveau-riche Newcastle were looking to make a splash in the transfer market following their mega-money Saudi takeover, and the Toon Army targeted Mauro Icardi. But a source close to the pair said: “Leaving Paris is not in Mauro and Wanda’s plans, it’s the last thing they want.”
It’s a shame, as bikini snaps on Merewether Beach would have fit right in on Wanda’s Instagram feed.
