Do you think it’s right for kids to be spanked in school?

A school in the USA has reintroduced corporal punishment after parents asked the school authorities to spank their children instead of issuing suspensions – but do you think it’s the right decision?

Cassville R-IV School District in Missouri is to reintroduce corporal punishment after a gap of 21 years following discussions between teachers, parents and officials.

Misbehaving students face being struck with a wooden paddle under new proposals that aim to improve discipline.

The punishment will be carried out by “certified personnel” and administered in front of a district employee who would act as a witness.

Children would not be struck in front of other students, with younger students being hit on the buttocks once or twice, with up to three blows for older students.

Corporal punishment will be implemented when “alternative means of discipline have failed”.

Supporters of corporal punishment claim it sets clear boundaries and motives children to behave in school.

LaShaun Williams, founder of childcare group Sitter Circle, said: “There are some children who like to push their limits. Those are the children who may require a pop. Knowing your child is the key to nailing down the most effective forms of discipline… Today’s disrespectful youth have shown what happens when necessary spanking is forgone.”

Meanwhile, the practice is opposed by many, including the American Psychological Association, which argues that is can cause children to become more aggressive and disruptive.

Studies have also shown that it can also inflict long-lasting physical and mental harm on students.
