Mum shares how she cleaned the heavy layer of soap scum off her shower with Bar Keeper’s Friend

An Australian mum has shared how she made a filthy shower sparkling clean using Bar Keeper’s Friend cleanser and polish to eliminate a heavy build-up of soap scum.

The woman said due to the ‘putrid’ state of the shower she expected to have to clean the glass doors multiple times but they were crystal clear after one scrub.

In the post to the Mums Who Clean Facebook group, she said she gave Bar Keeper’s Friend a go after fellow members recommended the cleaner on the shower in her new rental that hadn’t been cleaned by the previous tenants.

Before and after: An Australian mum has shared how she made a shower caked in soap scum look like new again using a ‘miracle’ cleaning product

‘We moved into our home 2.5 months ago and the previous tenants had not cleaned the shower at all. It was absolutely putrid,’ she wrote.

She said she mixed the Bar Keeper’s Friend power with water to make a paste and with a scourer wiped and gently scrubbed the soap scum off the shower

‘When I broke out the Bar Keeper’s Friend I was expecting to have to have a number of goes but it was one and done!’

The mum explained she mixed the Bar Keeper’s Friend power with water to make a ‘watery paste’ and with a scourer wiped and gently scrubbed the soap scum off the shower.

She said she then rinsed the paste off a few times until the white residue from the Bar Keeper’s Friend was washed away.

‘Once the glass/surfaces don’t have that white residue, dry with a soft glass microfibre cloth or wet the surface again and squeegee dry. Just water and Bar Keeper’s Friend is all you need,’ she said.

Dozens of members were impressed with the cleaning job ‘well done’ and others said the results looks ‘very satisfying’.

‘Me running to the shop to buy this miracle product,’ one woman said.

‘I only ever used BKF on steel things so must try on my glass shower now! Thanks!’ replied another.

‘I have a similar issue and this gives me hope’ a third commented.

How to clean glass shower doors with Bar Keeper’s Friend

To clean your shower door with Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser:

  • Wet the shower door.
  • Apply a small amount of cleanser to a wet sponge or non-scratch scrub pad.
  • Gently spread the cleaner evenly on the door’s surface.
  • Allow up to one minute for the cleanser’s oxalic acid to penetrate the grime.
  • Gently scrub the door, rinse well and dry it with a soft cloth.
  • You may need to repeat these steps to remove stubborn stains or soap scum.

If you have a sliding shower door, the tracks need to be cleaned, too. Tracks may have recessed areas and ridges that are tough to clean with a regular sponge.

  • Wet the tracks and apply a small amount of Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser to a wet toothbrush.
  • Scrub the inside of the tracks.
  • Rinse with clean water to rinse away the cleanser.
  • Wipe the inside of the tracks with a clean wet cloth or rag to remove any remaining residue.
  • You may need to repeat this step a few times.
