Hilarious gaffe sees Richmond club song played at the Gabba… Even though BRISBANE won

There appeared to be an inadvertently hilarious coda – at least for Brisbane fans and neutrals alike – to Richmond’s dramatic loss against the Lions when the Tigers’ club song was briefly aired at full-time.

The club song of the winning team is traditionally played at AFL grounds after the final siren has gone, but the DJ at the Gabba seemingly got confused after the Tigers lost by two points to the Lions.

As Brisbane fans erupted in celebrations and Richmond players slumped to the ground in despair, the notes of ‘We’re from Tigerland’ began ringing around the Gabba.

Joe Daniher (middle) kicked the crucial goal late in the fourth quarter as Brisbane won an epic semifinal 16.10 (106) to 16.8 (104) against Richmond at the Gabba

The embarrassing faux pas was immediately rectified as the Tigers’ club song ended abruptly and was swiftly replaced by the familiar strains of ‘The Pride of Brisbane Town’, which is sung to the tune of the French national anthem.

The gaffe went viral on social medial, where the official Twitter account of the Off the Bench radio show shared a clip of the incident.

‘The only worse thing than being a Tigers fan right now is being the guy who was on the buttons at the Gabba,’ read the caption.

It was a cruel end to an already dramatic night for Richmond, who were 30 seconds away from clinching a berth in the AFL semi-final before Joe Daniher snatched a 16.10 (106) to 16.8 (104) win for Brisbane.

Richmond players were distraught after a near-certain place in the semifinal was snatched away in dramatic circumstances right before the final siren

The Lions will play the loser of Melbourne vs Sydney in the semifinal next week

Trailing by four points after the Tigers had a goal given and then overturned to a behind following a video review, the Lions desperately shovelled the ball forward with a minute left in the game.

Zac Bailey marked, but with the angle too tight to go for goal, opted to look for Daniher, who was jostling for position in the goal square. The Lions forward couldn’t grab the Sherrin, but Richmond’s spoil bounced directly into his path allowing him to stab the footy through the posts for a famous win.

Brisbane will now play the loser between Sydney and Melbourne in the semi-final next week, while it’s curtains for Richmond.
