Leeds and Southampton‘s hopes of a late swoop for Cody Gakpo have reportedly been all but ended as PSV Eindhoven decide to keep hold of their star man.
After Manchester United cooled their interest in the Dutch winger following the £85.5million acquisition of Antony from Ajax, Leeds and Southampton emerged as two alternative suitors.
But the Athletic report that PSV have now decided to keep hold of Gakpo this summer and they are determined to get him to sign a lucrative new contract at the club.
Cody Gakpo will reportedly remain with PSV Eindhoven this summer despite English interest
The PSV winger has caught the eye of a number of clubs, including Southampton and Leeds
Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink added that Gakpo was expecting to board a flight to Leeds-Bradford airport on Thursday morning with six relatives and Leeds director Victor Orta.
Orta had been seen in Holland attempting to thrash out a deal but things look to have stalled and Elfrink details a ‘special twist’ saw all flight details deleted with the move reportedly off.
Gakpo’s stock elevated last season as he picked up an incredible 12 assists. He has three goals in four games already this season.
PSV bosses reportedly want to convince Gakpo to pen a ‘lucrative new contract’ in Holland
Despite being just 23, the Dutch international has already managed 43 goals in 146 games for PSV and won the Eredivisie.
Speaking at the weekend, Gakpo appeared to keep his options open when it came to his future.
‘It’s like a puzzle so in the next few days I will see which puzzle fits best,’ he said.
‘For me, it would certainly not be bad to stay at PSV. We’ll see.’
Gakpo has started the season superbly and already has seven goals and six assists from nine matches.
