Gary Lineker has led frustrations shared by football fans on social media after sport resumed today – without the nation’s favourite game.
Videos and photos were shared of the poignant tributes paid ahead of the men’s England Cricket resuming following the death of the Queen on Thursday, but people have been left asking the same question – why was just football cancelled?
Rugby Union, Rugby League, cricket and Formula One are all taking place this week, and fans were quick to voice their annoyance with the late decision made by the Premier League, EFL and National League on Friday after it was announced it would be at the discretion of organisers on whether or not they would continue with the weekend’s events.

It was only a matter of hours after the Premier League announced its decision to postpone its matches that the ECB announced that cricket would be resuming on Saturday, leaving football fans annoyed, especially after an emotional video was shared of the moment fans and players alike belted out God Save the King in a spine-tingling moment for the ages.
Gary Lineker took to Twitter and wrote: “Given the wonderful and moving scenes at The Oval, it feels a real shame that football is not taking place this weekend, therefore missing the opportunity to pay its respects.”

Piers Morgan joined in by voicing his opinion. He tweeted: “Magnificent. This is exactly how the sporting world should be paying respects to Her Majesty, and our new King. Ridiculous that football was cancelled.”
Plenty of other fans chimed in. Former MP Mike Gapes said: “This is bizarre. Rugby League goes ahead. But Premier League Football matches are called off?”
