Baltimore prosecutors call for Adnan Syed’s murder conviction to be vacated

Prosecutors in Baltimore are asking for Adnan Syed to be re-tried for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, a case that gripped the nation after it was featured on the podcast Serial.

In a motion filed on Wednesday, the state’s attorney for Baltimore City said that new evidence cast doubt on Syed’s conviction, asking for his guilty verdict to be vacated and a new trial date set, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The motion says that prosecutors are not asserting that Syed is innocent in the case, but it does recommend that he be released without bond pending retrial.

If follows a year-long investigation by prosecutors and defenders that uncovered new information concerning the possible involvement of two alternative suspects.

The office of Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, which is overseeing the investigation, said in the motion that ‘the State no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction’.

Syed has been serving a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering Lee, his high school ex-girlfriend, when he was 17. He was tried as an adult.

Developing story, more to follow.
