Britain is set to be rocked by tough winter weather conditions with overnight temperatures expected to drop to single figures.
Daytime temperatures in some regions of Britain this week could lift into the 20Cs, while in other areas, temperatures will reach around 15C.
A “major low pressure” system travelling from the North Pole has the potential to bring severe winds across Britain with icy conditions set to hit the UK by the weekend, forecasters have said.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “On Thursday and Friday there are signs of a cold plunge bringing colder air into the UK before a ridge of high pressure allows temperatures to recover at the weekend.

“Then we have another plunge from the middle of next week, and if this one comes to the UK it will set up a collision between Polar air and temperate air.
“There is a major low pressure coming down from the north and that brings some winds with it.
“While we are not looking at a full Arctic blast, it is going to signal the end of the mild summer weather, and we could start to see more snow over the mountains and glens of Scotland.”
He added: “With the winds, night-time temperatures are going to feel cold. We are now talking about putting the T-shirts away, and we are definitely going into winter-coat weather.

“It will feel colder in the north, and here is where there will be the greatest risk of morning frosts over night, but southern regions are also going to feel colder than of late.”
With freezing temperatures not set to take hold till next week, the next few days according to Met Office meteorologist Helen Roberts, will be quite settled.
She said: “It is going to be fairly quiet for the next couple of days and that is because we have high pressure in charge keeping things settled.
“Having said that, there will be a good deal of cloud for many of us and that cloud could be thick enough to give some drizzle.
