Floyd Mayweather blasts Amir Khan as ‘cloud chaser’ who was never a ‘top’ boxer

Floyd Mayweather has slammed Amir Khan and doesn’t want to fight him in an exhibition boxing match, claiming that nobody really knows who the British fighter is in America except really big fans of the sport.

Mayweather ended his professional career unbeaten after 50 wins with 27 coming by knockout. Meanwhile, Khan retired in February after losing to Kell Brook – finishing his career with 34 wins and six defeats.

Two weeks after retiring Khan called out Mayweather for an exhibition bout claiming that in their prime he would have beaten the American. Mayweather is currently making big money from exhibition non-scored fights and will face UFC star Mikuru Asakura in Japan on Sunday before meeting YouTube star Deji in Dubai on November 13.

“Amir Khan is reaching and reaching and reaching,” said Mayweather talking to the Daily Mail. “He has been reaching his whole career.

“He was a pretty cool fighter, he wasn’t a Floyd Mayweather or any of the other top guys. He did what he had to do. He’s a cloud chaser. I’m not even worried about Amir Khan.

“I guess he is big in the UK but no one in the US really knows him unless you’re really into boxing.”

At the age of 36, Mayweather defended his titles against Canelo Alvarez by winning the 2013 bout against the then undefeated fighter by a majority decision. Three years later Khan was knocked out in the sixth round by Alvarez, aged 31.

“It’s great that he (Amir Khan) feels that way,” Mayweather added talking about Khan’s view that he could have beaten him.

“But you’ve got to look in the mirror Khan against Canelo and look at me against Canelo. That’s your answer right there.”

Khan, who was Olympic Games silver medalist, believes that he was faster in his prime than Mayweather and would have beaten him.

“Honestly, I’d beat him,’ said Khan talking to Sky Sports. “If I was in my prime and he was in his prime I’m very confident. You have to believe in yourself and that’s one thing I’ve always done throughout my career.

“I think stylistically when Mayweather was a lot younger he had a lot of speed, a lot of movement. But I feel that my speed would have beaten his speed, my movement would have beaten his movement and he really wasn’t the biggest puncher in the game so it would have been like a game of chess but I would have outboxed him.”
