Man Utd’s decision to sack Ralf Rangnick cost £15million in redundancy payments

Manchester United ended up paying out £15million after sacking Ralf Rangnick at the end of last season – just six months after appointing him as interim coach.

The German coach was brought in to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season as a safe pair of hands until the summer where a permanent option would be picked. He had been parachuted in from Lokomotiv Moscow, where he had been in as manager of sports and development.

Rangnick signed a contract that would see him join United in a consultancy role after the season had finished but the arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager saw the former RB Leipzig boss sacked.

And the full cost of that decision has been revealed to be £15m in redundancy payments, according to reporter Kieran Maguire. The jaw-dropping total capped off a shoddy campaign for the Red Devils, who finished sixth in the Premier League.

In 24 matches in charge of United, Rangnick oversaw just 10 wins and his side conceded 33 times, including seven losses and seven draws. However, the club managed to save some pennies on the 65-year-old’s successor.

United agreed a £2.5m compensation package for Ten Hag with Ajax, that also saw assistant Mitchell van der Gaag make the move.

And the spending did not stop with the Dutchman splashing out on £220m worth of players in the transfer window, including on the likes of Antony, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez.

They currently sit fifth in the Premier League after recovering from a terrible start that saw embarrassing losses to Brighton and Brentford.

Wins over Arsenal and Liverpool have raised the mood at Old Trafford, who face Manchester City next weekend in another test of Ten Hag’s coaching.
