The rise of the Brixton Rangers? Tatler decries the ‘King’s Road has lost its crown’ as the pinnacle of poshness as Anaïs Gallagher, Carrie Johnson and Alix Mountbatten lead the It-Girl exodus south of the Thames

  • Socialites have been moving from their boroughs of North London to head south
  • Tatler declared it’s time to ‘move further south than any Sloane has gone before’

In their ’80s heydey, Sloanies could be been trotting up and down the King’s Road,  impeccably dressed in pearls and pashminas and with none other than Lady Diana Spencer as their poster girl.

However in recent years, according to Tatler, the upper class have been moving away from the trendy areas of Primrose Hill, Hampstead and Fulham for new locations – all of which can be found south of the river.

The society bible describes how, after Lord Frederick Windsor and his wife, Peep Show actress Sophie Winkleman, made a dash to Battersea in 2010, a flurry of London’s social scene have followed.

Among those to have recently made the move include Boris Johnson and Carrie Johnson, who are believed to have bought a house in the deep south borough of Herne Hill.

Among those who have moved to the hive in recent years include It Girls  Anaïs Gallagher and Iris Law, while Alix Mountbatten and Finn Cardigan Bruces have also taken plunge.

Meanwhile cricketers Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler have also adventured further south, opting to turn their backs on the prestige of North London.

Here FEMAIL reveals a few of the blueblooded would-be Sloanies who have instead, ventured across the river…

ANAIS GALLAGHER

Among those who count Peckham as their favourite London stomping ground is Oasis frontman Liam’s daughter Anaïs Gallagher (pictured)

Among those who count Peckham as their favourite London stomping ground is Anaïs Gallagher.

The 21-year-old daughter of Noel Gallagher, 54, and his ex-wife Meg Matthews, 55, lived in the area before moving away to raise baby goats in the countryside.

According to the society bible,  she could often be found enjoying an Italian meal at the trendy artusi, on Bellenden Road,

Anais has previous experience in the fashion and modelling world, having been signed up to a modelling agency at the tender age of 11.

The catwalk queen did her first campaign for Accesorise when she was 14.

Anais was recently unveiled as the new face of Reebok, and even rocked the catwalk for Dolce And Gabbana for Milan Fashion Week in 2017.

The runway star – who is currently studying a photography degree at University of the Arts London and previously penned a piece for Teen Vogue magazine about a woman’s right to vote – is also a contributing fashion editor spot in glossy fashion magazine Tatler.

With over 200,000 followers on her Twitter and Instagram pages combined, Anais is popular with her audience for her quirky fashion sense.

Typically Anais isn’t shy when it comes to displaying her incredible physique and has previously shared plenty of scantily-clad Instagram snaps.

Anais has previously said that although people know her name because of the success of her father, she is ‘proud’ to work hard and ‘sustain’ her career achievements.

The blonde-haired beauty said: ‘I think it’s tough for me because in no way am I here by my own right. I’m here with this platform because of my parents.

‘People say, “You only did that because of your dad”. That’s 100 per cent true, but I’ve only sustained where I am because I’m me. I’m a hard worker and I have my own mind.’

Meanwhile Anaïs’ boyfriend Julius Roberts can often be seen walking the streets of Peckham hand-in-hand with his high society girlfriend.

Anais first revealed her romance with chef Julius in July 2020, and has since shared a slew of loved-up snaps with him.

When the 21-year-old model daughter of Jude Law and Sadie Frost isn’t lapping up the streets of south London, she can often be found attending fashion shows around the world.

The fashionista was in Paris for Fashion Week and also attended the Dior show in the city last month.

Meanwhile she is also known for her love of daring outfits and skimpy ensembles, regularly sharing snaps in barely-there dresses and bikinis on her Instagram.

The 21-year-old has an incredible 668k followers on the platform, where she often posts photos of luxury trips abroad and jaunts around London.

Meanwhile her dating life is also often in the headlines.

In April, it was reported she was dating rapper Pa Salieu after secretly splitting from her long-term boyfriend Jyrrel Roberts.

It is not known how long the model, 21, has been dating Pa, 24, but they were pictured on a night out in the capital last October.

However, it’s not clear what Iris’ famous parents will make of her new boyfriend after she previously told of how they had instilled in her to always be polite.

Last year, Iris, who appeared in the Sex Pistols drama Pistol, told ES Magazine: ‘I’ve been brought up with morals, not necessarily to do with acting but for life. I’ve always been told to be polite, to be on time, to be attentive, to work really hard.’

ALIX MOUNTBATTEN

The late Queen’s distant cousin Alix Mountbatten is among the many elite who have made the move, with the 21-year-old settling into trendy yo-pro spot Clapham (pictured)

The late Queen’s distant cousin Alix Mountbatten is among the many elite who have made the move, with the 21-year-old settling into trendy yo-pro spot Clapham.

Alix, a lovely, sparky woman and goddaughter of the Countess of Wessex, is the daughter of Lord Ivar Mountbatten and his ex-wife Penny.

Lord Ivar, the son of the 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven and cousin to the Queen, actually married British Airways manager James Coyle three-and-a-half years ago, becoming the first-ever member of the extended Royal Family to be in a same-sex marriage.

She was born at Bridwell in 1998 shortly after her parents moved there and enjoyed, she has previously said, the ‘happiest’ childhood in ‘the most amazing fairy-tale house’.

Earlier this year, Alix became the first of Ivar’s children to offer an interview about the experience.

Alix, a freelance television producer, also made a documentary exploring how it feels when one of your parents comes out as gay.

She spoke a compelling honesty because she wants others who have been in similar situations to share their experiences on her programme, My Parent’s Secret Sexuality.

‘I want to create something that’s really honest and gives a voice to the children of a parent who’s come out,’ she said.

‘They’ve all had to deal with similar challenges, and I hope by sharing the feelings and experiences it will help heal the hurt.

‘My family story is really, really positive but my sisters and I are only able to have dinner and share our home with my three parents [they all spent lockdown together at Bridwell] because we have very open communication.

‘I want other children, from diverse backgrounds, to get in touch with me if they would like to interview their parents. We can explore the differences and similarities and recognise that, wherever you’re from and whoever you are, we still go through similar issues and feelings.’

KIRTHANAA NAIDU

According to Tatler, society beauty and professional table-scaper Kirthanaa Naidu can also be found taking in the sights of Peckham

The stylist moved to London from Malaysia when she was just 12 years old with her sisters and also hosts supper-clubs in the city (left and right)

According to Tatler, society beauty and professional table-scaper Kirthanaa Naidu can also be found taking in the sights of Peckham.

The stylist moved to London from Malaysia when she was just 12 years old with her sisters.

As well as working in Education and Events at Amnesty International, she also hosts  supper-clubs in the city.

She previously revealed how she fell in love with tablescaping during lockdown, telling FCUK: ‘I have enjoyed hosting from a young age, so having a table that’s enticing has always been important. I’d say I started exploring tablescaping more during the first lockdown. I was on furlough at the time, so I suddenly found myself with a lot of time.

‘To lift the mood of the house, I’d set a table for my flatmates to nurture a sense of escapism – so each week we would travel to a different a different country through the table by using things I’ve collected from Mexico, Spain, Italy and so on, pairing the table with the food.’

Since then, she is now considered one of the city’s most upper-class tablescapers, with over 21k Instagram followers lapping up her tips and tricks for creating the perfect dinner party atmosphere.

SYDNEY LIMA

Meanwhile model, writer and painter Sydney Lima is among those who have settled in Brockley

Multi-hyphenate Sydney, who once dated singer Tom Odell, is often seen at society events in London

Bordering the humming Peckham is Brockley, where residents can wonder up the ‘New Hampstead Heath’, also known as Telegraph Hill.

Multi-hyphenate Sydney Lima is among those who have settled in the area, which is famed for it’s antique shops and trendy bakeries.

Sydney, who regularly brushes shoulders with the likes of Laura Whitmore and Ashley Roberts at high society-parties, is a writer, painter and model.

The model also dated singer-songwriter Tom Odell for three years, before moving on to Ronnie Wood’s son Tyrone, 34.

Tom previously revealed the terrifying moment he thought he was having a stroke, after splitting from his model girlfriend Sydney sparked a panic attack.

Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, the singer revealed he ended up in hospital after collapsing in the shower when he suffered the attack.

He said: ‘I went through a very painful break-up with someone who I still love very much, I was increasingly worried about how I felt. One day I collapsed in the shower in Munich.

‘I felt like I couldn’t breathe and I was having a stroke. I ended up in an ambulance and in hospital. It was absolutely terrifying.

‘It was a horrendous month. A slammed door could send me into a mess of nerves. It was a severe panic attack.

‘Had I been more aware of mental illness the attack wouldn’t have been so bad.’

SOFIA BARCLAY

Among those flinging off the term Sloane Rangers and adopting the Brixton Ranger moniker is none other than Sofia Barclay

Among those flinging off the term Sloane Rangers and adopting the Brixton Ranger moniker is none other than Sofia Barclay.

The 24-year-old is the daughter of Aidan Barclay, and the granddaughter of Sir David, who built a business empire with his brother Frederick, making them two of Britain’s richest men with an estimated shared wealth of around £7billion.

The twins, commonly known as ‘The Barclay Brothers’, launched their business investing in hotels before expanding into shipping, retail and the media.

Born into a poor west London family, the brothers left school at 14, with Sir David working as a painter and decorator, running a newsagents and an estate agents.

It was only when they started redeveloping old boarding houses as small hotels they began making huge sums, building a huge hospitality business that included the Ritz until last year.

In July 2004, the Barclays bought The Telegraph Media Group from British businessman Conrad Black. Its stable of titles included The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, and The Spectator.

In recent years, the brothers increasingly delegated leadership of the media group and wider empire, including to Sofia’s father Aidan.

Sir David in particular was admired as an astute reader of political rhythms and was described by a friend as ‘able to read the economic tea-leaves like few people of his generation’.

He married much-photographed model Zoe Newton in 1955, when he was 20 and she was 19. They had three sons, Aidan, Howard and Duncan.

However Sofia hasn’t followed into her father’s business – and instead, is an actress and comedian.

She often performs at the The Cavendish Arms, and won praise for her role in The Collaboration at Young Vic Theatre earlier this year.

While Kat tends to keep a low profile online, Max regularly shares snaps of his wife and their adventures together.

And while some show the couple posing for holiday snaps in luxurious French resorts, others feature the pair enjoying the sights of London, including strolls through Kew Gardens.

But what about the boys! Top cricketers and the heir to BoomTown festival are among the men who have embraced south London

It’s not just the It Girls who have moved across the river in recent years – with some of England’s top sportsmen also making the move,

Unlike some of his more Instagram-shy south neighbours, Ollie often delights his 98k followers online with snaps.

He regularly posts photographs showing his training regime, as well as his days on the pitch.

Meanwhile he also often shares snaps of his adorable pooch Jaxson, who has his own Instagram page @lifeofjaxson__.

JOS BUTTLER

Not far from Ollie in Clapham is another cricketer, England Captain Jos Buttler, who lives in the area with his pilates-instructor wife and their children

The sportsman, who has a whopping 2 million Instagram followers, regularly shares updates of his life in London as well as tropical adventures abroad with his family online

Not far from Ollie in Clapham is another cricketer, England Captain Jos Buttler, who lives in the area with his pilates-instructor wife and their children.

The cricketer grew up in Taunton, Somerset before swapping the countryside for the city and moving to Clapham.

According to Tatler, the cricketer, who received an MBE in 2020, lives in ‘in a palatial red-brick’ in the neighbourhood.

The sportsman, who has a whopping 2 million Instagram followers, regularly shares updates of his life in London as well as tropical adventures abroad with his family online.

Plenty of his snaps feature his stunning wife Louise, who runs a successful pilates business.

Louise runs the LB Pilates studio in Clapham, and every day at 12.30pm she and Jos used to do pilates together, broadcasting the 25-minute session live on Louise’s Instagram page.

The first time, Buttler got dressed up in full England whites and batting pads, gloves and helmet.

While she tends to keep a low-profile, she was met with negative criticism in 2020 after she said the coronavirus lock-down is easier for her because she still has her 21-year-old live in nanny to help with childcare.

She went on: ‘A lot of the players have young children and a lot of the other mums find that it can be quite isolating. They spend a lot of time at home with the baby in bed at seven, and it can be quite long evenings.

‘We wanted to make it as easy to suit us, so we had some help, which has been amazing and I can do my Pilates and see lots of people everyday. ‘

Viewers were not impressed with the admission, with one insisting that ‘bragging’ about her nanny while millions of others have lost their income is ‘unaware, at best.’

FINN CARDIGAN BRUCES

Finn Cardigan-Bruces is just one of the many double-barrelled names one could find in the neighbourhoods of South-West London, according to Tatler

Finn Cardigan-Bruces is just one of the many double-barrelled names one could find in the neighbourhoods of South-West London, according to Tatler.

He grew up at Matterly Estate, which is home of the BoomTown festival, but now lives in Clapham.

The Matterley Estate has been home to the Bruce family since 1946, with the owner, and Finn’s father, Peveril Bruce setting up Boomtoom in 1998.

But it’s not the only party to be thrown on the estate – Finn had an extravagant 21st birthday party at the property which lasted for three days.

And if his Instagram is anything to go by, his partying days are still not behind him,

While he lives in Clapham, it’s not immediately clear how much time he spends in London, because his Instagram is chock-a-block with holiday snaps.

From trips to Malibu to Siesta Key, it appears Finn loves to travel to luxurious locations
